Guidance during COVID-19 pandemic

  • All pregnant women will be tested for coronavirus with COVID-19 Ag RAPID test as well as PCR SARS-CoV-2 test on admission to the delivery ward.
  • In case a pregnant woman tests positive, she will be isolated in a separated unit fully equiped for the labor and following care but without the presence of an accompanying support partner.
  • One birth support partner can accompany the pregnant woman (who tested negative) in delivery unit, bringing his own general respiratory protection FFP2. Fully vaccinated person should present with a negative COVID-19 Ag RAPID test result taken no more than 24 hours. Non-vaccinated person should present a negative SARS-CoV-2 RNA (RT-PCR) test taken no more than 48 hours.
  • The follow-up care measures for a newborn of a COVID positive mother are decided upon a strictly individual basis depending on the clinical state of both the mother and her baby, in accordance with medical staff recommendations. The mother will be informed about the risks and benefits of rooming-in care and breastfeeding.
  • All mothers with suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and their neonates will be isolated in a separate unit and cared for according to recommended infection prevention and control practices. The rooming-in care of a term and healthy newborn is possible, if the mother is asymptomatic or has only mild symptoms of COVID-19 infection.
  • Both symptomatic and asymptomatic neonates born to mothers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, regardless of mother’s symptoms, should have SARS-CoV-2 RNA (RT-PCR) testing performed at approximately 24 hours of age.
  • Separation may be necessary for mothers with severe symptoms and are too ill to care for their infants or who need higher levels of care.
  • Separation may be necessary for neonates at higher risk for severe illness (e.g., preterm infants , infants with underlying medical conditions, infants needing higher levels of care).
  • To ensure a safe care environment and minimise risk to our patients and staff, the visitation policy for Clinic of Neonatology M. Rusnáka is being currently updated. No visitors are permitted in the maternity ward .
  • Both parents of a neonate requiring treatment in NICU/NIMCU are allowed to visit their baby in case they respect all currently recommended infection prevention and control practices. Parents must be free of any COVID-19 symptoms. At all times while they are in the facility, their face protection must cover their nose and mouth.
    • Fully vaccinated person should present with a negative COVID-19 Ag RAPID test result taken no more than 24 hours. The test should be repeated every 3 days.
    • Non-vaccinated person should present a negative SARS-CoV-2 RNA (RT-PCR) test taken no more than 24 hours. The test should be repeated every 3 days.
    • Parent tested COVID-19 positive can enter the NICU after no sooner than 10 days of isolation and showing no clinical symptoms of the disease, presenting with a negative PCR test after 10 days (will be allowed to enter by staff, according to CT values and clinical status).
  • Discharge from the Clinic of Neonatology M. Rusnáka:
    • Discharge from the maternity ward/rooming-in (4th floor, blok A, šestonedelie) 1 support person is allowed to come to accompany the mother and her baby.
    • Discharge from NIMCU (6th floor, blok A) both parents may come to take their baby home.
  • The parents of a neonate requiring NICU/NIMCU treatment may ask for information via phone call every day between 11,00 am to 2 pm.
    • NICU (4 th floor) contact: 02/6867 2680, 02/6867 2685
    • NIMCU - Neonatology intermediate care unit (6th floor) contact: 02/6867 2715, 02/6867 2714
  • Follow up care for risk neonates is provided according to recommended infection prevention and control practices. Only one parent/legal guardian is allowed to accompany the infant to the ambulatory appointment. Because of the increased transmission of the coronavirus we require masking in all our facilities. We kindly ask the parents to respect the schedule of the appointment. In case of arisen respiratory symptoms of parents or infant we ask to announce cancellation via phone call.
